The all-new Toyota RAV4 has arrived and with it comes a relatively broad range of hybrid is the diesel -- the previous go-to variant for towing -- leaving just the hybrid GX, GXL and Cruiser and petrol-only Edge with their maximum 1500kg towing capacity (150kg maximum towball download). While you may scoff at the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid’s mere 1500kg towing maximum, it's more than enough to tow a camper trailer or small to medium caravan today. The Toyota RAV4’s hybrid technology is also what we’ll see in heavy-duty tow vehicles tomorrow. For example, the LandCruiser 200 series -- the caravan fraternity’s heavy-duty hero tow vehicle -- is going to be replaced in 2021 by the 300 series, that must embrace new tech to meet tightening emissions Toyota has not yet revealed exactly what will power the 300, it’s obvious that -- unless Toyota engineers come up with a never-seen-before large, high-output diesel engine with super-low emissions -- hybrid must be in the course while we already have a relatively heavy-hauling pure-EV, the Tesla Model X, here and now (with its 2200kg maximum capacity), the reality is that it’s expensive and lacks the range, recharging infrastructure and recharge speed to be a realistic around-Australia towing tourer. Toyota RAV4 tows the lineSo back to the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Here we have the mid-grade GXL model in AWD form that starts at $41,140. The test vehicle had the $600 premium paint and $1121 (fitted) towing pack (towbar, towball and trailer wiring harness), making for $42,861 (plus on-road costs) as latest Toyota RAV4 Hybrid comes comes with a raft of standard equipment. All models come with a full suite of safety equipment and driver aids, such as active cruise control, pre-collision safety system with autonomous emergency braking, lane departure alert, road-sign assist (speed sign only), automatic high beam, seven airbags, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitor, rear-cross traffic alert and reversing camera. There’s also an eight-inch infotainment screen with embedded satellite-navigation, dual-zone climate control, keyless start and entry, Bluetooth, digital radio and voice recognition. The RAV4 GXL Hybrid also has 18-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, wireless phone charging, five USB ports, leather steering wheel and gear shift, and auto-dimming rear-view features include reversing guidelines and hitch point marker on the camera screen and trailer-sway RAV4 on the insideThe Toyota RAV4 seats have a high hip point, so getting in and out is easy, and the seats themselves are supportive and comfortable. The RAV4 also has one of the biggest interiors in the class, with plenty of room inside for four adults to travel fight over who gets to charge their device in the RAV4 is pretty much sorted with five USB ports (three at the front, two in the rear and one 12v port (and one auxiliary port) up front. The cargo area is a large, squared-off space to store luggage and has four tie-down points and a cargo blind. If you’re running a portable fridge there’s also a 12v port on the right cargo wall. The only hiccup in terms of spec for touring is that the RAV4 Hybrid only comes with a space-saver spare, fitted under the cargo floor -- not ideal if you get a flat tyre out in the are no nasty surprises accessing control and instruments, with everything logically set out and easy to find. The infotainment system could be a bit easier to work through -- while the eight-inch screen is up high and easy to see, it’s a bit difficult to transition between some of the menus until you’ve spent some time with the are not generally the sharpest-handling vehicles to drive, but the RAV4 is a lot better than you might expect. The steering is not especially tactile and heavy cornering will see a fair bit of body roll, but the RAV4 points nicely and grips quite well on its OE Bridgestone Alenza rubber. Toyota seems to have got the ride really well sorted out when driving solo at least; it’s compliant while still being well controlled. Performance is also very good; if you’re not accustomed to driving a hybrid you might find the electric whirring and petrol engine kicking in here and there disconcerting at first, but with its maximum 163kW/221Nm (petrol engine and electric motor combined) the RAV4 Hybrid is responsive and quick when you want it to it’ll run on the electric motor up to 40km/h on a light throttle (if the battery has enough reserve) beyond that the petrol engine starts up. In normal driving you hardly notice the petrol engine humming away, but under heavy acceleration it’s noisy. Speaking of noise, while driving at 100km/h there’s more wind noise from around the side mirrors than you’d expect, but otherwise the RAV4 is quiet. On the hitchBacking up to the 1220kg Caravelair Antares 496 caravan we borrowed from Caravelair in Toongabbie NSW, the Toyota’s rear-view camera offered a nice, wide angle so you can see the hitching point easily (although the centre marker on the screen wasn’t quite on the money for lining up the towball with the hitch). The RAV4’s suspension rose 8mm at the front and dropped 25mm at the rear with the 77kg towball download. The RAV4’s side mirrors were a good shape for our clip-on towing on the freeway at 100km/h the RAV4 sits well, with no yawing and only slight fore-aft pitching. Delving down a particularly rough secondary road, however, saw the Toyota pitching fore-aft a bit more than you’d want. The pitching wasn’t the worst I’ve experienced under such conditions, but it’s obvious the suspension isn’t a perfect tune for towing. Performance with the van behind was very good -- while there was some torque-steer when accelerating from low speeds, once underway the RAV4 felt planted and responsive. It’s hillclimb performance was excellent, maintaining 90km/h up the climb with half throttle applied. Engine noise, however, was quite intrusive, as the CVT auto searched for the power braking down the test hill was equally impressive. While I had to allow for the Caravelair’s override brakes, the RAV4’s ability to reduce speed (using the CVT auto’s manual mode) was promising. Fuel economy surpriseThe great unknown with a hybrid like the RAV4 is how towing affects fuel consumption. Does lugging a trailer along make it a thirsty, eco-unfriendly vehicle? It seems not: the RAV4 achieved towing the caravan, and later while towing a Jayco J-Pod Outback weighing around 1000kg it achieved these figures aren't earth-shatteringly good, they're similar to towing figures we’ve obtained from competitors like the Nissan X-Trail and Volkswagen Tiguan - both of which were fitted with fuel-efficient turbo-diesels. With the fuel figure we obtained with the RAV4, you’re looking at an acceptable 416km touring range with a 50km safety margin out of the 55 litre figures without a van behind were a mixed bag: while the RAV4 sipped just on the freeway, it drank over much shorter urban runs. The final wordThe new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is a convincing light-duty tow vehicle, showing that a hybrid can be a viable alternative to diesel for towing. While it could do with a firmer ride when towing on rough roads (and a full-size spare for touring in the outback) with its good fuel economy, performance and towing stability the RAV4 Hybrid would have to be on your shortlist for light to medium towing duties. How much does the 2019 Toyota RAV4 GXL Hybrid cost? Price: $41,140 (plus on-road costs) Engine: four-cylinder petrol/electric Output: 163kW/221Nm Transmission: Continuously variable Fuel: (ADR Combined) CO2: 111g/km (ADR Combined) Towing: 1500kg maximum, 150kg (towball) Safety Rating: Five-star ANCAP The RAV4 Hybrid is one of the most popular new cars in North America; it has been and still is one of the best-sellers in the compact crossover category. It offers a lot of conveniences, with excellent safety ratings. It is packed with features that are popular among Toyota customers. The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid has a new colour. There are several other available trims for this car. Be sure to get a tour of this car with the video above or check out the many photos in the photo gallery below! Toyota has a long history with hybrid cars and technology, having been instrumental in the development of both. The 2022 RAV4 Hybrid has a lot to offer, given its build quality, dependability, and strong resale values that come standard with every new Toyota. The 2022 RAV4 Hybrid feels considerably larger on the inside than it looks from the outside. The enormous cargo holds a capacity of cubic feet when the 60/40 split rear seats are lowered, or cubic feet when they’re both folded down, which is identical to that of the gas model RAV4. The recipe for the RAV4 Hybrid is simple: Take the best-selling non-pickup in America, then add two electric motors and a battery pack. The result is a compact crossover that's both noticeably quicker than its non-hybrid counterpart and significantly more efficient. The RAV4 Hybrid's mushy brakes, droning engine note and rubbery steering mean this isn't our favorite hybrid SUV on the market, but we also wouldn't dissuade anyone from buying it. This fuel-sipping crossover has soldiered on with minimal changes since it debuted in 2019, and that's broadly true of this year's model as well. However, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid does have a few tricks up its sleeve. Possibly inspired by the standard RAV4's TRD Off-Road trim, the new RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Edition adds a handful of features to augment performance on the trail. It features unique suspension tuning, twin-tube shocks, Falken Wildpeak AT all-terrain tires and a roof rack. Even if you aren't going for the spiffy Woodland Edition, upgrades throughout the lineup make this RAV4 Hybrid more desirable than the 2022. The standard touchscreen grows to 8 inches this year and the optional screen now measures inches. Both are equipped with Toyota's newest multimedia system, which adds a Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless Android Auto to the mix. (Wireless Apple CarPlay was already included.) Według producenta RAV4 Hybrid AWD-i potrzebuje średnio 5,6-5,9l/100km. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 222KM AWD-i e-CVT. PodsumowanieRAV4 Hybrid AWD jest wystarczająco dynamiczny, dobrze wyposażony i - co ważne - potrafi być oszczędny. Daje też sporo przyjemności z jazdy. Okolice 6,5 l/100 km w mieście to wynik do osiągnięcia bez problemu. Na autostradzie i w trasie zużycie paliwa także wypada nieźle, ale trzeba się postarać. Osoby poruszające się dynamiczniej mogą narzekać na przekładnię CVT. Toyota RAV4s make awesome project cars and with the right uprated parts you can substantially maximize your driving fun. Originally designed as a practical family car it's just crying out for some performance upgrades. It is a smart modern looking SUV class vehicle which is incredibly reliable and great to work on. We have seen some awesome RAV4 tuning projects and there seems to be quite a loyal fan base of RAV4 owners. Sadly though we see many people wasting money on their RAV4 doing the wrong mods and then having to start over. Follow our articles to avoid wasting your money Improving the handling for people often first priority in your RAV4 tuning project. We would go to a maximum drop of 35mm on most models. You risk ruining the stance and practicality of the car if you go lower than this. Our aim in RAV4 engine tuning should be to increase peak power and Torque at the top end. With our pointers your RAV4 can become an awesome performer and yet still reliable daily run around. The best power gains come from larger engine sizes. The more you start with the bigger the return on investment so engine swaps are good value mods for small engined cars. RAV4 Engine Tuning. Best Engine Mods for your RAV4 Mapping - remapping provides the most power in terms of cost savings, aftermarket ECUs, and piggyback ECUs are all alternatives on older RAV4's. Fast road cams are one of the most significant mechanical changes, but they must be installed by someone who knows what they're doing and they are not always easy to source but you might find a local firm to regrind a stock camshaft. Intake and Exhaust - Note that on their own these mods will NOT ADD POWER in most cases, but they can help enhance power after other mods by removing the restriction. Suspension Upgrades - improving the handling of the RAV4 really improves your enjoyment of this well designed chassis. RAV4 Tuning stages Typical stage 1 mods often include: Alloy wheels,Suspension upgrade (drop 30-40mm),Sports exhaust,Lighter flywheel,Panel air filter,Remap. RAV4 Suspension Mods Suspension Modifications & Upgrades for the RAV4 Suspension geometry dictates how a vehicle handles, and hence improving it is an excellent method to boost performance. Lowering Springs Reduce the height of your vehicle to enhance handling. There are various brands of lowering springs available, but we would strongly recommend you stick with a quality kit, and we prefer coilovers that are adjustable wherever they are available. Suspension Kits for the Toyota RAV4 Investing in a suspension package is another cost-effective method of achieving a premium appearance and performance. Coilover Kits for the Toyota RAV4 Coilover systems often, use rubber top mounts on both the front and rear ends to offer a comfortable ride at any speed and allow you to adjust the ride height and spring characteristics. They are intended to efficiently absorb heavy impacts, providing drivers with a very pleasant ride. Therefore, if you're seeking for a comparable sensation, consider investing in one of the high-end coilover kits. Shock Absorbers for the RAV4 As its name implies, shock absorbers are designed to absorb shocks and hence provide a more pleasant ride. RAV4 Performance Camshafts A fast road camshaft proves to be one of the best NASP power modifications you can do with a single part fitted to your engine. Performance camshafts increase the power at higher RPMs and are more suited to gasoline engines than diesel engines. On the majority of engines, you can typically increase top-end power using performance camshafts. Because the cam profile has a significant impact on the engine's power production, cam modifications may make a significant difference. Due to the fact that the intake and exhaust durations will vary depending on the cam profile used, substantial engine power improvements are possible with cam changes. Fast road camshafts often boost performance over the rev range; you may lose some bottom-end power, but top-end performance will improve. While race camshafts increase the top end band, the vehicle will not idle smoothly and bottom end power will almost always suffer. On a daily driver, you'll want to match the horsepower range to your driving style. I'd never find a RAV4 Motorsport cam to be a joy to drive in congested traffic. This is because a competitive cam profile produces a very lumpy idle and makes the vehicle more prone to stall or jerk along in stop-and-go traffic; unfortunately, many disregard this and wind up ruining a perfectly decent car by reverting to a fast road or OEM cam profile. Each engine reacts differently when cams are installed owing to the head and flow characteristics, as well as the cam being less aggressive cam durations. Therefore, see each engine and camshaft as unique due to manufacturing tolerances and quality variances, and set your engine up on a rolling road. Enhancements to the RAV4's airflow The intake and exhaust flow play a large part in your cars power band, but be careful here, getting this wrong can upset the idle and make the car hard to drive in traffic. You'd need to follow a cam upgrade with other mods and finish with a reflashed ECU to fully realize your gains. Don't forget to uprate the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty. Using higher octane petrol is another option if you find you are suffering from detonation or premature ignition on your Toyota project after fitting other upgrades. Uprated injectors will enable you to supply sufficient fuel to the engine. If have increased your fuelling with bigger injectors you will also need to get a bigger fuel pump to supply it. RAV4 Intake and Exhaust Tuning. Breathing mods are usually next up. Please note that WE DO NOT RECOMMEND INDUCTION KITS, unless you have tuned your car extensively and are finding that the standard air intake has become a restriction. Induction kits can work well on turbo engines and larger engines (if supplied with a suitable cold air feed or air box), generally though we'd just recommend for RAV4 engines you should just fit a sports panel air filter preferably made from cotton. It is essential for any engine tuning work to get as much air as possible into your RAV4 engine, with the goal of removing any restriction that may arise after extensive tuning. Air intake manifolds transport air from the air filter to the engine cylinders during the suck phase. Upgrades to the RAV4 air intake system Upgrades to the air intake system are the most critical component of any automobile modification. It is often the first area on which most car owners concentrate their efforts. An air intake system increases the vehicle's air gulping capability as compared to the factory arrangement. Improved airflow enables your RAV4 to get a more efficient mixing of fuel and air, hence increasing the combustion rate. As a result, the vehicle's power and torque output will be increased. RAV4 Performance Panel Filters Another method of increasing airflow to the engine is to use performance air filters. These components have been particularly engineered to be less obstructive. As a result, they allow for more airflow. On the RAV4, doing large valve conversions, porting, and head flowing will also improve bhp, and as an extra advantage, will let you to enhance the bhp increase from other modifications. Sports exhausts balance the flow of air through the engine. But if the exhaust is too big, ie: it's over inches bore, you will lose much of your flow rate and end up lacking power and torque. Getting a professionally ported and polished head with larger valves can fully release the engines power. A good fast road upgraded clutch will help to keep that power going where it should. Never cut corners or assume a standard clutch to cope. Remaps offer significant power gains on all turbo charged cars. On NA (naturally aspirated) engines the benefits are doubtful. However a remapped ECU on a NA (naturally aspirated) engine will help unleash the potential if you have done a lot of mods. We've also come across some owners playing with twin charging conversions and making some impressively high power figures. The most phenomenal power gains for NA (naturally aspirated) engines usually involve the addition of forced induction. Turbos are generally harder to add than a supercharger. It is difficult to map fuelling with a turbo as the boost comes on exponentially with engine speed. It is easier to map a supercharger because the boost is proportional to engine speed on a linear curve. Decreasing the engines compression ratio will allow you to add forced induction, water injection may also help prevent detonation. RAV4 Alloy Wheel Upgrades. Alloy wheels will help the brake cooling and are usually less heavy than the steel ones. We'd like to point out although they can look cool on the RAV4 big alloy wheels will actually decrease your performance. The larger you go the lower your acceleration will be - this to the change in your effective final drive ratio. For this reason we would advise sticking to a maximum wheel size of 18 or 19 inches, although we know some of our members have gone larger than this with no problems with low profile tyres but this just doesn't seem right on the RAV4.
